TTHE CONDITIONALS

C O N D I T I O N A L T Y P E III

if + subject + past perfect verb*+ subject + would have + past participle
or+could have + past pariciple
or+might have + past participle

E xample :
(Bill had an accident because he didn’t drive carefully)
But if Bill had drivenmore carefully , he would not have had an accident.

Examples

If I had studied,	I would have passed the exam. If I had studiedI could have passed the exam


If I had studied,	I might have passed the exams.

Thethird conditional is often used to express criticism or regret

***If we had played a little better, we could have won the game.
Regret: We didn't play well, so we lost the game.

***If you had saved your money, you could have bought a computer.
Criticism: You didn't save your money, so now you can't afford a computer.

EXERCISE
In this exercise, you will practise forming the third conditional. Based on the example sentence, complete the third conditional sentence by filling in the spaces. For example:

1. He crashed his car, because he fell asleep while driving.
If he……………………asleep while driving, he……………………………his car.

2. We couldn't go to the concert, because we didn't have enough money.
If we……………………enough money, we……………………….to the concert.

3. I lost my job because I was late for work.

Answers :

1.If he hadn’t fallen asleep while driving , he wouldn’t
have crashed his car.

2. We couldn't go to the concert, because we didn't have enough money.
If we had had enough money, we could
have gone to the concert.

3. I lost my job because I was late for work.
I wouldn’t have lost my job my job if I hadn’t been late for work.

4. The wind was so strong that the bridge collapsed.
If the wind hadn’t been so strong, the bridge wouldn’t have collapsed..

5. I couldn't call Sally because I had lost her number.
I could have called Sally if I hadn’t lost her number.
