Street children is a phenomenon which exists all over the world. What causes it and what can be done
to eliminate it.?

*** An estimated 100 million children and youths between the ages of 5 and 18 in both developed and developing countries spend the major part of their lives in the streets. And what makes the matter worse is that the number of these children is increasing at an alarming rate. So what makes these children flee away from their homes ?
***First of all, due to poverty many of these children are forced into the street to contribute to their families’ meagre incomes in whatever they can: by shining shoes , selling cigarettes or begging from passers-by etc. Secondly great many of them run away because of the brutality of family members. Therefore, the streets present an irresistible temptation for them,where they feel happier and enjoy more freedom. What is more is that some children have no choice but to leave their homes because of the death of the mother or thefather, divorce, remarriage or irresponsible parenting. Consequently, they find themselves on the street with nothing to eat, no clothes and nowhere to sleep.
***They feel that all their dreams are shattered. Therefore they lose self-confidence and start taking drugs or sniffing glue. Moreover , others fall prey to sexual exploitation once the become street homeless.
***To tackle the problem of street children effectively, it’s necessary to do everything possible
to reintegrate those children who become excluded back into society by educating them, teaching them how to live in society , providing them with board and lodging and most importantly listening to them and explaining to them how to be positive members of society. Eventually the government has a crucial role to play by doing all it can in order to eliminate poverty.
