Mary is 36 , when she was 21 she had a violent argument with her parents and was asked to leave home . With no moneyand nowhere to go , she found herself wandering in the streets . She slept out in the streets for 15 years until a couple of months ago when she was rescued by the St Mungo Association , a
charity for the single homeless . This is the story of her lost years…….

‘’ It was 1976 when I left home ,’’ she says .’’ On that first day I just wandered about the streets . I got
talking to some people who were sleeping out by Victoria Station ; I found a box and settled down next to them for the night. ‘’ It was very frightening . I hardly slept a wink. At about five in the morning we were asked by the police to move on .Passers-by shouted abuse at us.

‘’I went for quite a few jobs but as soon as I admitted that I had nowhere to live I was told to go away. I tried to find places to rent , but without money upfront I had no chance at all.

‘’ There were very few women in the streets and they were all much older than me . But everyone was very kind. I found them quite interesting _ many were educated people.. They introduced me to day centres
where we could get a cup of tea , a shower and some clean clothes to wear . I tried contacting my parents but they didn’t want to know. After four years I moved to a site close to Waterloo Station . I wandered around and lived on what people gave me.

‘’ Earlier this year somebody told me about the Paddington Green hostel which had been opened in a disused hospital . By then I had long given up hope of leading a normal life. It was strange getting into a bed with sheets and blankets . In fact I couldn’t sleep that night , so I curled up on the floor in my sleeping bag.

‘’ Now I’m in one of the half-way houses run by St Mungo’s. The ide ais to help me cope on my own again as I’ve never shopped , cooked or looked after myself. When I’m ready, they will help me move into either a one-bedroom flat or a shared house.

‘’ I’ve been going to the Job Centre every day to look for work. I’ve put on weight . Whe I first came in off
the streets I was 50 kg, very lighjt for my height of 160 cm . I think I’ve missed my chance of having a family . But with the state of the world today , I wouldn’t want to bring a child into it anyway.

‘’ Those were lost years in my life but I learnt a lot – especially about how to keep my self–respect , no matter what . When things were at their worst, I just remembered that I was as much a human being as anyone else.’’
